Month of Poetry 2016

6th January

A yearning

for childhood.

As days merge

Into one another.

No concept of

passing time.

Days are of

no consequence.

Loved in a way

that will never

come again.

I watch my son.

So achingly sweet

As history

repeats itself,

And my childhood

becomes his.

‘Saudade’ is a Galician Portuguese word with no direct translation into English. It’s a deep emotional state of nostalgic longing for an absent something that one loves. It often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing will never return.
